WELCOME
The Second Chance Shelter is a non-profit, no-kill dog shelter located just east of Boaz, Alabama. We operate solely on private donations and fund raisers. We receive no funding from local or state government. All of our dogs are de-wormed and up to date on vaccinations before they are adopted. We have dogs of all shapes, sizes, and ages. Our dogs range in age from just weaned to seven or eight years old. Most of our dogs are mixed breed dogs, such as Schnauzers, German Shepherds, Bulldogs, and Labradors. We take at least two dogs per week to have them spayed or neutered. All donations to our shelter are tax deductible.
About Us
In May of 2008, my husband Doug and I started the Second Chance Shelter. Doug is a police officer in Albertville, Alabama and the city was euthanizing 130 dogs and puppies a month just in our little town. We decided we had to try and change that. We put up a 10,000 square foot fence and the rest, as they say, is history. We started with seven puppies that someone dropped at a house in Albertville. Those puppies would have been put to sleep immediately if animal control had to be called. We adopted out all of those puppies and haven’t stopped since! We are definitely a work in progress, but we have come a long way in a year and a half. Our ultimate goal is to have a state of the art building where these dogs can stay until they find a forever home. Right now, they are in kennels with tops and dog houses for each dog. Thanks to a generous donation, we have started constructing pole barns for the kennels to give them more protection from the weather. Right now we have 144 dogs who are looking for homes. We can’t take any more in until we can get our numbers down. We have found homes for well over 500 dogs since we started.
